Our History

Take Charge was founded in 1990 as the result of our founder’s desire to reduce the number of African American juvenile males entering the juvenile justice system and being sent to detention facilities.

Shaar Mustaf believed that rehabilitation could begin successfully with diversion and he set out to demonstrate that behavior modification techniques,  accountability, image, academic achievement, and pride in oneself and culture could provide life-changing opportunities for youth.

Take Charge is in its 26th year of providing uninterrupted services to communities in Prince George’s County and the District of Columbia.
